If you and your partner are the kind of people who would rather take a scenic detour than rush to dinner, sleep in a campervan instead of a resort, or trade a traditional date night for a private boat ride through a fjord, Alaska is pretty much the ultimate romantic adventure.
Alaska is the kind of place where you can wake up beside a glacier, spend the afternoon hiking through the mountains, eat salmon you watched being pulled from a river, and end the night listening to live music in a tiny town surrounded by wilderness.
It feels a little like escaping the normal rules of reality.
Why Alaska Is the Most Romantic Place on Earth
If you're an adventurous couple looking for a romantic getaway that feels completely different from your everyday life, Alaska is hard to beat. This is the kind of place where your date night might involve watching whales from a boat, hiking across a glacier, camping underneath the midnight sun, or sharing a bottle of wine beside a turquoise alpine lake.
Alaska feels remote in a way that is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Many communities aren't connected to the state's road system at all, and even Juneau, Alaska's capital city, cannot be reached by road from the rest of the state. That sense of remoteness is a huge part of the magic.
It's also what makes Alaska such an incredible destination for an adventure wedding or romantic Alaska getaway. You can genuinely escape the ordinary here.
My Favorite Way to
Experience Alaska
fly into Anchorage
& rent a car
There is SO much to experience within driving distance of the Anchorage, including glaciers, ocean views, mountain passes, wildlife, hiking trails, charming small towns, and some seriously spectacular scenic drives.
From Anchorage, you can head north toward Talkeetna and Denali, stopping in Palmer along the way to explore Hatcher Pass and take a guided tour of Matanuska Glacier. Or head southwest toward the Kenai Peninsula and explore Girdwood, Hope, Seward, and Homer.
One of my favorite experiences is taking a boat tour from Seward into Kenai Fjords National Park, where you can see massive glaciers, dramatic fjords, sea otters, sea lions, puffins, whales, and other maritime wildlife.
Head north:
Palmer → Hatcher Pass → Matanuska Glacier → Talkeetna → Denali
Head south:
Girdwood → Hope → Seward → Homer
If you have enough time, try both
The Kenai Peninsula alone could fill an entire trip, while the drive north gives you a completely different side of Alaska.

Alright let’s dive in to the details! Here’s all of my tips for planning a romantic Alaska getaway and experiencing Alaska’s beauty and local charm
start in Anchorage
Use Anchorage as your jumping-off point rather than spending your entire vacation in the city.
Pick up your rental car or campervan, stock up on groceries and outdoor supplies, and get ready to hit the road.
This is also where I would make sure you have everything you need for camping, fishing and exploring before heading somewhere more remote.
If you're renting a campervan, Alaska is an especially fun place to do it because you can turn the trip itself into part of the experience.
One company worth checking out is River Wild Camper Vans. Their Anchorage-based vans are designed specifically for Alaska adventures, and their rentals can include camping chairs, a table, cooler, cooking equipment and even bear spray.
For a couple, I love the idea of having your own little home on wheels and waking up wherever you happen to end up.
Heading North
Hatcher Pass
The area is also known for wildflowers and beautiful summer scenery.
Hatcher Pass Lodge hosts live music
There’s an Annual Festival hosted at the lodge called Hatcher Romp. This festival is founded by a staple of the Alaskan Music Scene, a local Americana band, Blackwater Railroad Co.

Palmer + Hatcher Pass
From Anchorage, head north toward Palmer.
The Mat-Su Valley is gorgeous, and Palmer is an easy place to slow down for a day before heading farther into the mountains.

July is the perfect time to come to Alaska if you want to experience Hatcher Pass come to life with the echos of local talent and touring artists sharing their music in the mountains. My favorite Palmer Festivals take place back to back weekends, both tastefully curating stacked lineups of impactful indie artists.
2nd Destination
I’d Recommending hopping on a
Glacier Tour near Palmer
If you've never actually walked on a glacier, Alaska is the place to do it. And yes, I mean actually walk on the ice.
Matanuska Glacier
Guided glacier walks leave from private access near the Glenn Highway, and guides provide equipment like crampons and poles.
Matanuska Glacier is particularly convenient for a road trip because it's one of the most accessible glaciers in Alaska and the largest glacier in the United States that can be reached by vehicle.
Knik Glacier
You can also explore Knik Glacier near Palmer through guided ATV, jet boat or helicopter experiences. Some helicopter tours even land on the glacier.

Talkeetna + Denali
Continue north toward Talkeetna.
Talkeetna has a completely different personality from Anchorage. It's small, quirky and surrounded by incredible mountain scenery.

Small-town Alaska charm
Talkeetna is one of those places where you should slow down and enjoy being there. On a clear day, the views toward Denali are spectacular, and you can also book flightseeing tours that take you deep into Alaska's mountain wilderness.
It's also one of the classic jumping-off points for Denali adventures and flightseeing.
If your budget allows, consider a flightseeing trip around Denali. Seeing the Alaska Range from the air is one of those experiences where you probably won't say much to each other because you'll both just be staring out the window.

Heading South of Anchorage:
exploring the Kenai Peninsula
If you want to experience a little bit of everything Alaska has to offer, head south from Anchorage to the Kenai Peninsula, often called “Alaska’s Playground.” You'll find rugged coastline, towering mountains, glaciers, forests, rivers, and incredible opportunities for fishing and wildlife watching. This is where you can explore Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park, hike to Exit Glacier, take a boat tour to see whales and tidewater glaciers, fish for salmon, or continue south to Homer and Kachemak Bay—making it one of my favorite parts of an Alaska road trip or romantic getaway.

Stop 1: Girdwood
Girdwood is an easy first stop south of Anchorage and a great place to ease into your road trip.
It's surrounded by mountains and glaciers and has a more cozy, romantic resort-town feel than some of the smaller communities farther south.
If you want to mix adventure with a little luxury, this is a good place to book a nice dinner or cabin before heading farther into the wilderness.
Home of Alyeska Ski Resort, Girdwood brings access to ridgeline views and winter adventures for those who shred the slopes. Check out the Sitzmark Music Schedule to catch their winter music series!
Stop 2: Hope, Alaska —
Tiny Town, Big Personality
Hope is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving its roots as one of Alaska's early gold-rush communities. Founded in the 1890s after gold was discovered nearby, this tiny community grew into a bustling mining town before eventually settling into the charming, quiet town it is today.
Tucked along Turnagain Arm, Hope feels like a little time capsule, with historic buildings, mountain views, hiking, fishing, and a surprisingly lively summer music scene. There isn't even a traditional gas station in town, but there is an amazing music scene tucked away here as well as an outdoor historical museum exhibit.
Hope has an unexpectedly
awesome music scene.
Creekbend Cafe hosts live music, festivals and touring artists throughout the summer, and they also have camping, a yurt and RV/tent accommodations. Their current calendar includes national touring acts alongside local musicians.
There is something very Alaska about spending your day hiking through the mountains and then wandering into a tiny town at night to hear live music.
If that's your kind of date night, put Hope on the list.
Stop 3: Seward — Fjords, Whales & Glaciers
From Hope, continue toward Seward
All of my favorite Alaska Adventures took place in Seward so I’ve gotta put this town as my favorite Alaska town experienced yet!

Seward is one of my favorite stops for couples because you get that perfect combination of mountains, ocean, glaciers, and adventure. If you're planning an Alaska elopement, this is also an incredible place to build an entire wedding weekend around.
Seward is the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, and one of the best ways to experience it is by boat.
Book a half-day or full-day cruise through Resurrection Bay and the fjords, where you can potentially see humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, sea lions, puffins and massive tidewater glaciers.
For an adventurous couple, I'd take it a step further and look into a private boat charter or private water taxi rather than automatically booking the biggest standard tour.
There are remote coves and wilderness areas around Resurrection Bay that can be reached by water, and water taxis can take you to secluded hiking areas and beaches. As well as Remote Cabins for rent along the coastline.
Imagine packing a picnic, hiring a private boat, finding a quiet stretch of coastline and spending the afternoon with basically nothing around you except mountains, ocean and wildlife.
That's my definition of a romantic Alaska getaway.
Exit Glacier.
It's one of the easiest glaciers in the region to access by road, with trails leading from the visitor center toward the glacier. If you're feeling ambitious, the Harding Icefield Trail is a much more strenuous adventure with huge views.

Stop 4: Homer

Homer is famous for its long, narrow Homer Spit, which stretches out into Kachemak Bay. It's an especially fun destination for couples who want a little more ocean, seafood, art, and quirky Alaska charm.
Eat seafood. Browse the little shops. Take a kayak trip. Book a fishing charter. Sit outside with a drink and watch the mountains change color. And if you're visiting during the summer, check the festival calendar.
One of my favorite surprises about Alaska is how much live music there is.
The entire state has a small-town, community vibe. Traveling around the Kenai Peninsula, I’d recognize the same familiar faces traveling with me from one festival and concert to the next. The community is vibrant and the summers are packed with creative events to maximize the long sunlight days as contrast to the dark alaskan winters.
